Jane's Diary entry - 19th January 2009
The Hairy Bikers, Dave Myers and Simon King, came to our Somerset farm in January after a very wet winter, not the best time to visit, but they would not be deterred!
My husband Tony, Jonathan one of our sons, Barry our fantastic butcher and myself awaited their arrival with trepidation. Ours is a small family run working farm and we are not used to celebrity visits.
The bikers arrived on one very large bike (it needs to be, as they are large blokes), as the other bike had broken down in Cheddar. We had no idea what to expect but need not have worried as they were charming, funny, and instantly put us at ease, sitting in our kitchen drinking tea with cats on their laps and dogs at their feet. Then off to our on-site farm shop to talk to Barry the butcher, no prior questions or discussion about buffalo meat, just relaxed conversation and joking all the time; after talking to Barry the Bikers selected their chosen cut of meat, buffalo fillet steak, that they wanted to use for their competition at the Castle hotel in Taunton.
Despite my reluctance they persuaded me to cook some fillet on my cherished 50 year old AGA. My cooking skills are basic (and that's being charitable) so the thought of cooking on camera and in front of real cooks was terrifying! But both the bikers and the camera crew happily ate what I cooked with great relish and said that is was so succulent 'you could eat it with a spoon' making particular comment about the flavour and tenderness they. Just shows how easy it is to cook our meat!
Then they were off, we asked them to let us know the result of the cook-off hoping that one of their production team would find the time to let us know, but the next day Simon himself phoned, and said that they had.......(Nope I'm not going to spoil the surprise, watch the program to find out the result for yourself)
We all had a great and fun experience with two of the nicest, and most genuine guys you could wish to meet, many thanks to Dave and Simon, and the rest of the crew
Hope you enjoy the programme! , click here to see more photos.
